Before being irrevocably linked to Post-Thanksgiving shopping, "Black Friday" referred to Jay Gould's attempt to corner the Loose Gold Market in 1869.

Lilyhammer: Guns , Snow and The Weekend Ahead.

I'm a big fan of this show.
Steven Van Zandt is terrific as Frank Tagliano.
So I'm excited that Season Three starts today (Nov 21st) on Netflix. At least that's what the Billboard said on LaBrea-
Of course that means the whole season appears magically on my Roku all at once.
I love the new order of things!

The Strange Drowning of Elisa Lam

Enhanced Security Cam Footage of Elisa Lam's final moments

It's been almost two years since the  body of Elisa Lam was discovered in the rooftop water tank of a Los Angeles hotel that had seen better days.

The Story is shocking:
A young Canadian woman tragically dead-
A hotel with a serial killer and suicide-laden history-
The consumption of human remains-
A malfunctioning elevator-
Apparent strange behavior-
There has been much speculation online, much of it focused on the possibility of her being murdered by a ghost or some kind of malevolent force.
from Ghost Diaries.
 and Art Bell
Vigilant Citizen

Others focus on the genuine and down-to-earth Human tragedy.

Elisa Lam just before her death.

More:
From the LA Times
And USA Today.

We'll probably never know the specifics of what happened. But what we do know is that  this young woman's life was cut tragically short. And her family has suffered a loss from which they will never fully recover.
Rest In Peace Elisa.

On Luck

What is luck?

Definition from Merriam-Webster

We have a complicated relationship with this term as evidenced by this exchange between the Ubersuccessful Howard Schultz of Starbucks and Oprah of (The Oprah Universe):

Oprah's stance on luck is well-known (She doesn't believe in it)  here is a discussion from Yahoo

I myself belief in Luck. I have been lucky many times in my life. I enjoy  being a working actor and Filmmaker but I am keenly aware of the happy accidents that have put me in the right place at the right time over and over again.
Now I won't deny that I am engaged always in a continuous process to improve my skills. I also work daily at advancing my projects and interests with massive (and what I perceive to be) intelligent actions. But I know many people who do the same and have not been able to crack this town.
In short I am a Lucky Guy!

From Practical Ethics

Here is an excellent piece on "Luck" from Professor Michael Mauboussin on HuffingtonPOST

Another thing to consider- Am I Lucky because I think I am. Has this thought turned into a core belief? Is it embedded so deeply in my psyche that I cause lucky occurrences to happen? (ala The Placebo Effect)
The word itself (meaning the visual interplay of the letters) seems to have a certain kind of happy quality. Or maybe that's just a a programmed cultural response I carry. Anyway...
Let's try something:
I am going to attempt to spread "Luck" This is a lucky digital talisman I have made feel free to take it and see if maybe Good Fortune can be spread.

A Dream of Green Lantern

This comes up from time to time. Yes I was hired to voice "G'hu" on "Green Lantern."
I say Voice because like many of the Lantern Characters the Visual was CG.
I was excited, my brother Jim who is a major Comics Industry guy was excited. But alas...
my character never made it to the final cut. I did have a great time working on it however.
Here I am on set with GL's amazing director Martin Campbell. (In case you don't know Martin directed "Casino Royale" one of my all time favorite Bond films.)

Since stumbling upon Jane Roberts who began the Channeling Craze way back in 1970 I find that I can't get enough of the fact that there are a huge group of people (Some would say) making an excellent living talking in a funny accent and presenting more or less the same scientifically unproven (ie; in magnetism two positives always repel each other) Law of Attraction formula.

"The Happiness Two-Step" or Follow These Two Steps and You Will Be Happy

Having reached the Half-century mark I have learned many things the hard way.
At this point I am confident in offering the following:

THE SECRET TO HAPPINESS

ONE: FORGET ABOUT WHAT YOU WANT.

(If you are even remotely like me-you don't even really know what it is. The best I have been able to muster is a strong suspicion based on the constant programming foisted upon me by the materialistic society I live in.)

TWO: DO YOUR BEST TO BE OF SERVICE TO OTHERS.

People around you right now are in pain. They need comfort, hope, help to the restroom, a ride, a sandwich... the list goes on and on. No matter where we are in our own struggles we are in better shape than others in some way.

Of course a Spiritual attitude helps with both of these steps. But even if you don't believe in a Higher Power-(An overlying All-knowing Force of Love and Law.) These two steps will work.

And by "work" I mean they will bring you PEACE.

And PEACE = HAPPINESS

God Bless-

Paul Parducci: The Naked Truth!

I was listening to KFI here in Los Angeles the other night and they had the excellent Actor/Writer Fred Stoller on talking about his new book- which I will link at the bottom.

Fred was discussing the life of a perennial Guest Star in Hollywood. (Something I have some experience with!)

It takes great courage and candor to discuss the actual workings of a career in this business where most of the time Brand Management is the top priority.

In any event Fred's take on his work inspired me to do a little reflective thinking. I'm usually the kind of guy that's always looking forward.("What's Next." Is my Motto)  My career has never overly impressed me. But I do Love to Act and still get a kick out of being on sets and working in front of the camera. (And Hope of course springs eternal! I will  get to my experience with Pilots in another post.)

Although I've been lucky enough to have worked frequently, many times with interesting parts in association with very talented artists, I always felt that this kind of work-a-day Hollywood stuff was kind of boring. The life of a Character Actor (And I'm proud to call myself one) is more a life of usefulness to projects rather than  being the heartbeat of a project itself. (I'm seeing at this point that I will have to explore this  at length in another post also or we'll be here all day. See I already think you're bored.)

Anyway-at one point Fred mentioned Guest-Starring on The Naked Truth this is a show I Guest-starred on as well, playing one of my mainstays a bully named Doug Keller.  (So I went to the script pile I keep in the corner of my office and pulled out my script from somewhere near the bottom.) Flipping the pages brought back  fond memories of this experience not the least of which was meeting the fantastic character actor Norman Fell  and working with the charming, beautiful and whip-smart Tea Leoni. The episode was also directed by Robby Benson. (Who I found to be unusually gifted in getting to the kernel of scenes-not easy to do in the fast-paced world of Sitcoms.)

I have enclosed a pic I had snapped with Norman as well as the cover and cast page from the episode I Guested on.

Here is Fred's book.

Aeschylus: On Gaining Wisdom

“He who learns must suffer;
and even in our sleep
pain that cannot forget
falls drop by drop upon the heart,
and in our own despair,
against our will,
comes wisdom
by the awful grace of God.”
― Aeschylus

Considered the father of Tragedy
